Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen'
Trollius are buttercups on steroids bursting into flower in late spring and early summer.
'Golden Queen' has semi-double golden yellow flowers with a contrasting centre of deep orange.
The flower stems are tall and sturdy and don't require staking.
The flamboyant colour is thrown into sharp relief by the dark green, serrated foliage.
They grow well in a sunny or part-shaded border, but they must have a moist soil and are quite at home in bog gardens or by the edge of a pond. After flowering, sometime in mid-August, shear back hard to encourage fresh new growth.
Makes a wonderful cut flower too.
