Silene asterias

Cherry drumsticks

This rare and unusual perennial is from the Balkan peninsular and is unlike any of the other Silenes in cultivation.

From compact rosettes of smooth shiny grey-green leaves rise pom-pom heads of tubular crimson flowers on long stems, with striking blue anthers and dark bracts.

Prefers moist soil and full sun but will grow in partial shade with a good mulch.
