Schizachyrium scoparium 'Camper'
'Camper' is a long-lived bunchgrass from the wide open spaces of Nebraska.
It has dense roots that can grow to 150cm deep making it an important grass for erosion control particularly on dry, poor sites.
It is also used as a forage crop for livestock and provides a source of food and cover for ground nesting birds.
The Bluestem family are so called for the bluish colour at the base of the clump although the main foliage can be bluish (Prairie Blues) various shades of red (Blaze) or purple-pink (Camper).
All of the varieties have fuzzy white seed heads at maturity.
We recommend these grasses for their compact, elegant shape, varied autumn colour and well behaved nature. Unsurpassed in windy, poor and dry locations.
