Salvia patens 'Blue Angel'
Clary, Muscatel sage
Although classified as a perennial, keeping 'Blue Angel' so in the UK will depend on the amount of shelter and drainage you can supply.
It was discovered in Central Mexico in 1838 so it really likes a hot dry climate.
It can be treated as a tender perennial as any tubers can be dug up and overwintered in a similar fashion to Dahlias. Alternatively, if this seems like too much trouble, save the very tiny seeds and treat as an annual.
Occasionally in the right place and given a dryish winter plants can develop a tuberous root system that allows them to pull through and thrive. Any efforts you can make to help will be rewarded with an amazing display of flowers of the purest electric blue.
A must have plant for the serious gardener.
