Pennisetum villosum 'Cream Falls'
One of the earliest grasses to produce flower-heads, this small plant becomes a mass of fluffy, dancing caterpillars in shades of cream to buff from mid-summer onwards.
It is native to the mountains of northeast tropical Africa.
All Pennisetum varieties are borderline hardy in the UK and can only withstand temperatures down to -10ºC (14ºF).
By leaving the deciduous growth intact over winter and providing some frost protection we manage to keep them going but if in doubt, they make good container plants which can be moved into a greenhouse over the colder months.
They like heat, sun and tolerate dry spells well.
