This is an easy to grow exotic from Japan that adores a moist leafy soil in part to full shade.
A member of the saxifrage family, which includes Heuchara and Astilbe, it's a wonderful foliage plant that spreads by rhizomes and makes excellent ground cover.
In spring the pinky-red young shoots push out of the soil and slowly expand into large, very deeply-cut, saucer-like, rich green leaves.
In late summer the small, pale yellow flowers appear on thin wiry stems. These are charming rather than impressive but certainly add a little glamour to the darker recesses of the garden.
