This is an easy to grow exotic from Japan that adores a moist leafy soil and part to full shade. A member of the saxifrage family, which includes Heuchera and Astilbe, it's a wonderful foliage plant that spreads by rhizomes and makes excellent ground cover in the darker areas of the garden.
In spring the pinky-red young shoots push out of the soil and slowly expand into large, very deeply-cut, saucer-like, rich green leaves. In late summer the small, pale yellow flowers appear on thin wiry stems.
These are charming rather than impressive but certainly add a little glamour.
