Miscanthus sinensis 'Ferner Osten'
Japanese silver grass
'Ferner Osten' is one of the best mid-size Miscanthus for its intensity of colour, ability to catch the light and for its broad, upright and graceful habit.
Long densely packed leaves sport a cream mid-rib whilst the flowers are held at a uniform height, clear of the foliage. These flowerheads are a lovely rich red with paler tips.
The foliage tints red in autumn whilst the flowerheads are resplendent in tones of bright copper, bronze then silvery buff.
This grass looks especially ravishing when combined with other late summer performers such as Eupatorium and Helenium.
Despite forming a dense bold clump this grass is suited to most sizes of garden.
