Miscanthus oligostachyus

Japanese silver grass

If you like the imposing Miscanthus species but don't have the room this is a compact variety from the Japanese islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu.

It's very showy with tiny pinkish-silver flowers that rise above the foliage to a metre or so tall. Inflorescences turn silvery white by autumn as the seeds mature.

The leaves display bronze-red tones at the same time before turning beige in winter.

It's very cold tolerant and is happy on heavy clay soils in either full sun or partial shade.
