Hylotelephium (Sedum) telephium
'Black beauty'
Stonecrop
With purple-red umbels held on dark-stems and deep purple succulent foliage, there are no real downsides to having these plants on full display.
They flower just at that point in the year when very little is left to admire and they stand beautifully over winter, their dense seed heads glinting in hard frosts.
Sedums, or telephiums, as we must now call them are much overlooked, often relegated to difficult areas or consigned to tubs.
They deserve better and swathes of them planted with grasses, heleniums, rudbeckias or phlomis look outstanding.
Plant them in poor, dry soils in full sun if you can although they will tolerate partial shade and most garden soils.
Rich soil and moist conditions will make them floppy.
