Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra

'Burning Hearts'

False Sunflower

Introduced in 2016, this is the sister plant to 'Bleeding Hearts' and is another outstanding cultivar from the same breeder.

'Burning Hearts' has purplish almost black stems and foliage which culminate in bursts of golden yellow flower heads, each with a captivating red eye. It simply shrieks "look at me".

Very easy to grow in fairly poor dry soils in full sun, Heliopsis are hardy and vigorous. Too much water and rich soil will cause the plants to become lanky and flop over.

Treat them mean and they will delight both you and every pollinator going from late summer until the first frosts.

Leave the seed-heads on overwinter as they provide beneficial food for the smaller birds.
