Eupatorium maculatum 'Glow'

Joe Pye weed

One of the best plants for butterflies (particularly tortoiseshells and red admirals), this large and imposing perennial suits wilder, more naturalistic areas.

Species Eupatorium can be a little unkempt but 'Glow' is an improved cultivar that puts on a spectacular show. The long stems are a rich, burgundy red  topped with soft, pink umbels of tightly packed flowers.

In autumn, it has an imposing silhouette, great shape and commanding stature having reached 175cm tall and 80cm wide.  As summer draws to a close the flowerheads become a soft mass of fluffy seeds.

Deadhead to restrict their spread. Easy to grow in normal garden soil they will repay a little extra water with improved growth.
