Echinops sphaerocephalus 'Arctic Glow'

Globe thistle

Globe thistles are large, rambunctious, coarse plants that are fun, highly decorative yet imposing.

Strongly branching maroon coloured stems, prickly leaves and big balls of tiny white flowers with dark blue stamens make 'Arctic Glow' a very desirable plant.

From mid to late summer,  bees, butterflies, hover flies and anything that can reach will swamp these globes desperate for the rich nectar they supply.  After flowering, small birds take over extracting the nutritious seeds.

Leave these plants standing as the silhouette against a deep red autumn sunset is just exquisite.

Very easy to grow on any well drained soil in sun or partial shade
