Dianthus cruentus

Blood carnation

A native wildflower from the Balkans, this is a very chic little plant that's popular with the more expensive garden designers and sold out in minutes when it was on sale at Chelsea.

It's versatility has a lot to do with it as it can be used in containers, borders, gravel gardens, edging, ground-cover and is drought tolerant and deer resistant.

The blue-green grass like leaves are evergreen and tough and will form tight little clumps. The clusters of blood red flowers are held on long wiry stems and bloom from late spring to mid summer and attract butterflies in profusion.

It's easy to grow given well drained, slightly alkaline soil in sun but will not tolerate heavy soils and excessive wet.
