Carex testacea 'Prairie fire'

Orange New Zealand Sedge

This variety of Carex is an excellent specimen plant suitable for both containers and borders. It's a versatile foliage plant with slender olive green shoots when young  that turn an intense orange brown in autumn.

The colour lasts all through winter.

The tiny dark red panicles of flowers appear in late summer on long trailing fronds. These look fantastic flowing over the edge of a tall planter.   Plop some in the border and they will cheer you up on bleak sunless days.

Plant in sun for the colour to really zing.

It's not very fussy with regard to soil types, tolerating dry or quite boggy conditions however permanently waterlogged sites will rot the roots.
