Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'
Feather reed-grass
For anyone nervous about planting grasses, this is the go to specimen.
Non-invasive, neat and tidy with stiff erect flower panicles in bronzy shades that look stunning from mid summer through to spring. It's the classic border grass popularised by Dutch master plantsman, Piet Oudolf.
Use it as a dot plant in the border or in stiff formal rows as a windbreak. As a vertical accent it doesn't get much better than this.
The stems change from grey green to a deep straw colour in winter.
It doesn't need staking and can tolerate high winds without becoming ragged. Very low maintenance - just trim the old growth down to 5 to 8cm in spring and enjoy. Deciduous
