Aquilegia viridiflora 'Chocolate Soldier'
This columbine cultivar, developed in 1902, has sweetly fragrant flowers with chocolate-purple petals and lime green stamens.
It is much more compact than A. vulgaris and prefers an evenly moist soil with shelter from hot sun.
The leaves are a delicate blue-green.
Cut back hard after flowering.
A little more fussy than the usual cottage garden types but a bit of a talking point.
