Althaea cannabina

Palm leaf marshmallow

Derived from Greek, Althaea means to heal which is why members of this genus have been used in medicine since time immemorial.

Pliny recommends mallows for everything - from extracting splinters to complications in childbirth.

Culpepper appreciated their garden worthiness; "They flower all the summer months, even until the winter do pull them down".

With that kind of heritage these light and airy relatives of the hollyhock deserve a prominent position in the garden. They tolerate a wide range of situations and rarely need staking; for best results grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun
